Grace Group for Parents

As part of our Here, Near, & Far vision, God has led NewCity to focus partly on the ongoing mental health crisis here in the Charlotte area. One way we do this is through the Grace Group for Parents, a Connect Group that supports parents whose kids are struggling with mental health.
The Group, which will meet every other week from September through May, integrates neuroscience, psychology, and biblical insights and values with simple therapeutic tools and exercises. The material follows a whole-health (holistic) approach (Physical, Mental, Spiritual/Faith, Relational). The goal of the group is to see participants educated and empowered to have transformative, whole-health outcomes.
DeeAnn Stelzl, who leads the Group, shares about her passion for this work. “Several years ago, I found my family in a mental health crisis involving my 17-year-old daughter. At that time, I was uninformed about the inner workings of the mental health system, and while I eventually found the resources I needed, it took more than a year. During that year, I felt like I was helpless and didn't have anyone to talk to about what was going on. Two moms from New City crossed paths with me, and I learned they had been navigating similar things for their children. As we began to meet regularly to share resources and report what was happening with our kids and the ways God was using this mental health journey to refine us and also bless us, we realized there are many more parents out there who need support.”
Parents who have been part of the Grace Group in the past have talked about the inspiration that comes from the community and how they have been pointed toward biblical wisdom through the study.
One parent wrote, “Grace Group members came alongside me during a time of crisis with my daughter, providing prayer, community, resources, and hope. The stories shared inside the group are incredibly encouraging. If you have a child(any age) who struggles emotionally or with specific mental health challenges, this group could make a big difference in your life.”
Another couple shared, “Grace Group has greatly enriched our faith in providing an oasis of wisdom, love, and compassion. My wife and I leave energized knowing that God is in control.”
DeeAnn Stelzl reminds us that mental health challenges affect the whole family, and sees Grace Group as a way to bring together parents to encourage each other, pray together, and learn more about healthy ways to cope and manage what is happening with their children. “If you are experiencing similar issues—a child with emotional challenges, diagnosed or just upsetting the family dynamic—I encourage you to join us on a Sunday evening for camaraderie, support, and new friendships.”
